Yoga

The word "yoga" can be translated to mean the science of self-study or oneness which implies union and the study of life, death and spirit. Although the physical, hatha yoga, and the meditative, dhyana, disciplines are the most well-known in the West, there are four main branches of yoga: raja, bhakti, karma and jnana yoga. Raja yoga includes hatha yoga, pranayama (breathwork), dhyana (meditative) along with 5 other practices. Bhakti yoga is the yoga of devotional love as expressed, for example, through hymns and the monkhood. Karma yoga is the yoga of service. Mother Theresa would be an exemplary figure of karma yoga. Lastly, Jnana yoga is the yoga of wisdom. The questioning of the meaning of life and human destiny by 20th century philosophers would be considered jnana yoga.
